COLLAGING DEMENTIA STORIES

WHO ARE PATIENTS WITH DEMENTIA?

IN SPRING 2018, ENABLE FOUNDATION COLLABORATED WITH HKYAF TO USE THE DEMENTIA COLLAGE, A METHOD ORIGINALLY DEVELOPED BY THE ENABLE FOUNDATION TO GUIDE YOUNG PEOPLE TO ENGAGE WITH SENIOR CITIZENS WHO LIVE IN CARE HOMES WHO HAVE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF DEMENTIA, AND COLLECT THEIR LIFE STORIES.

HAVE YOU EVER MEET SOMEONE WITH DEMENTIA? WE CREATED SITUATIONS FOR SOME YOUNG PEOPLE TO HAVE MEANINGFUL ENGAGEMENT WITH OLDER HONG KONG CITIZENS. THESE DESIGN PARTNERS INCLUDE ACTIVE SENIOR CITIZENS WHO ARE CO-CREATORS OF THEIR DESIGNS AND ALSO PATIENTS WITH DEMENTIA WHO SHARE PERSONAL STORIES.

COlouring our Hong Kong Stories

DO YOU KNOW WHAT OUR ELDERLY DID WHEN THEY WERE YOUNG? OVER 30 SENIOR CITIZENS WERE ENGAGED, AND TWO MAIN STORYLINES WERE DEVELOPED by our team of design reseachers: FROM FARM TO TABLE AND DAYS OF OUR LIVES. illustrator Don Mak and graphic design stuio Hato were invited to join the project, and created a series of dementia Stories visual system, THEY represented THE COLLECTIVE STORIES OF OUR Hong Kong OLDER GENERATIONS AND BECAME PATTERNS FOR ALL OF US TO SHARE WHILE COLOURING HAPPILY.

ABOUT DEMENTIA GOING

BEYOND MEMORY LOSS – WELCOME TO DEMENTIALAND

With the risk of exaggeration, in Hong Kong dementia is considered to be part of the natural ageing process, and, thus, receives little special attention. Because of its complexity, dementia is mysterious for many people and generally understanding is limited to memory loss only. While the medical and social care experts are busy developing cures and services to help patients with dementia and their carers, we believe the contribution of design researchers could lie in enabling the public to better understand this mystery. From designing demented objects, we want to expand the concept of dementia and magic to the whole city. We aim to prepare all citizens ready to welcome patients with dementia to go out and live within their communities. The parameter of our Neuro City design research project is to get the public to have a better understanding of dementia by inviting them to step into “DementiaLand (2018)”, a dementia-inspired magical environment, to experience different symptoms that go beyond just memory loss.
